Continuing the running list of reasons that I love Denmark from my previous post. Remember: this list has not been created ranking reasons in order of importance/significance. It simply is being added to as new reasons take form and/or as I manage to take a satisfactory accompanying photograph. Enjoy!
Reason #8: The Royal Library (the Black Diamond). This stunning architectural feat doubles as a library and a restaurant/café. Up the first moving platform (imagine a slanted moving sidewalk from the airport) and you will find yourself beneath a magnificent ceiling. Continue higher and higher and you get views of the two wings of study/book rooms, and on a clear day will have a view of the harbor before you out the main windows. Pretty much the coolest place to study.
Reason #9: Comfortable, clean, easy to use public transit. My commute on trains and buses is actually enjoyable! I write blog posts, do readings, complete vocabulary worksheets and other assignments while watching the scenery (or darkness, depending on the time of day) fly by. Free WiFi is available on all commuter trains, but I haven't set up an account to use it yet (partially because the instructions are in Danish and I am too lazy to translate them). And since the Danes aren’t into small talk, the trains are [usually] nice and quiet. Other nice features include a display showing where en route you currently are as well as doors that keep the cold air out of the main part of the car by creating a small atrium for entering/exiting the train.
Families (note the child in the snowsuit) enjoying the scene in central CPH on Saturday late-afternoon |
Reason #11: Weekends! [note: This would belong much higher on my list if I was ranking these reasons in order of importance rather than based on when I find an appropriate photograph]. I love the fact that the weekends are something special and different in Denmark. They are a time to let loose and indulge in a way that makes you appreciate the things that you sacrifice during the week. A couple of examples: on the weekends we eat sweets, something that seems special because during the week we very rarely eat them. People sleep in past 6 or 7am. We can also take longer showers (~7 minutes), though I usually don't. And if you decide to take a shower, Lars reconfigures the temperature handle to allow for us to use hotter water. Monday morning the handle will be back to point when the water is comfortably warm, but not hot. Once again, something I never appreciated before. I also love weekends because they are often full of family. They are jam-packed, but they always fit in extended family time.
Reason #12: Street musicians. I had to include this after my last post. Wandering the streets of Copenhagen listening to several different types of musicians while families milled about enjoying the weekend (see the connection... weekends... family... street music... copenhagen... amongst the colors of the buildings... with the sun setting... all of my reasons for loving CPH are interacting)! It makes for a special moment and an enjoyable stroll through the city streets.
